Book review – Lambretta 125 A-B (the birth of Lambretta)

Okay so I added the subtitle myself, but this book really should be marketed as “the birth of Lambretta” because if you have even a passing interest in these motor scooters then you need to read how it all began.

Maybe I’m a bit old school but I do get a little excited at the thought of a new Lambretta book from Vittorio Tessera. The internet has it’s place of course, but for me if you want to read something of quality then it can only be done on printed paper..

For those who have never seen one of Vittorio’s books, let me explain a little. The passion for scooters, especially Lambretta that this man has is second to none. For everything he writes, he carries out a tremendous amount of research beforehand, then gathers together as much pictorial information as he can before sittingdown and creating either a magazine article for ScooterNova, or another book.

For those who simply want to know that Innocenti produced their first scooter in 1947 and then scroll through a list of models, then go online.

If however you wish to learn about how Innocenti got to the designing and producing their first scooter, who drew it, where they did that, how it was marketed, where it was sold, model development (the Series 1, 2 ands 3 of the A) and then how the Model B came into being, then you need this book.

It continues in a similar vein through both B models, plus takes as a look at the rare B Sport.

Vittorio then goes on to investigate concepts for the Lambretta that were not put into production. Not only does it contain all this information and much more, but the documents, drawings and photographs that Vittorio has managed to obtain and reproduce in it are fantastic. Remember, some of these are almost 80 years old! Over the years Vittorio has tracked down and met many of the important names behind the Lambretta scooter, and he shares a lot of their first hand stories in this book as well.

Combine that with a look the top speed record attempts that were based on B-type engines, accessory sidecars, plus the A in Argentina and Switzerland, and we have a fascinating book about the birth and early years of the Lambretta scooter.

And this is one of those must-have books. Whether you have. Model A or B Lambretta, or you wish to learn more about the origins of your Lambretta GP – even your Serveta – then this is where it all began.

Yes it might sound like I am gushing, and yes I know the book is sold via the ScooterNova shop, but it really is an essential read for both Lambretta enthusiast and scooter enthusiasts in general.

The book measure approximately 26x 25cm, so the photographs can be explored in fine detail (not on a 2” smartphone screen!), there are around 120 pages and the price from the ScooterNova bookshop is £31.99 plus P&P. If you are buying this in Europe then the cover price is a little more at 38 Euros.

Also back in stock are the rest of the books in the series, including D/LD, Series 1, J-Range, Series 3, Lui Range and dl/GP. You can buy these and others books from our online shop at https://scooternova.com/product-category/books/
