The Design Museum in London closed back in May in preparation for a move from its location on the River Thames near Tower Bridge, west to its new location on Kensington High Street. What has this got to do with scooters? Well, to help with the move, the Museum are putting a dozen exhibits up for adoption, including an example of the iconic Vespa scooter.
The Design Museum’s new fundraising campaign is aiming to raise £200,000 towards the £1 million required for the construction of the new site in the former Commonwealth Institute. To do this they are appealing to fans of design icons by asking them to adopt an object from amongst its many exhibits by donating as little as £5 to secure its home in the new museum.
Twelve design icons spanning the 1920s to the early 2000s are up for adoption, including the Bristol built Vespa Clubman 150, Anglepoise lamp, Apple iMac G3 desktop computer, Cartoon Chair, Dieter Rams-designed Phonosuper SK5 turntable, G-Force Cyclonic vacuum cleaner, GPO Tele 150 telephone, Louboutin Pigalle stiletto heeled shoes, Melodic kettle, My First Sony tape deck, Trabo toaster and a Valentine typewriter.
If you choose to adopt the Vespa – or any other design icon of course – you will apparently receive one of 12 personalised thank you films, showing the item ‘travelling’ from Shad Thames to the new Kensington site and your name on their museum’s website, amongst other things.
