Piaggio’s press conference at the Milan Motorcycle Show (Eicma) kicked off today at 12:30pm local time with a new version of their electric Vespa being announced for the near future. The new

Vespa Electtrica will feature the same modern styling but is fitted with a more powerful motor that has a top speed of 70kmh (the current version only reaches 45kmh). Piaggio state that the larger capacity battery also featured on the new Vespa will give the scooter a range of up to 70 kilometres in ‘power’ mode and 100kms at 45kmh.

Of course unlike other retro scooters and brands displaying elsewhere at Eicma, Piaggio’s Vespa has a proven pedigree and its own design that has seen the famous Italian Vespa constantly evolve since its conception back in 1946. The latest models will receive cosmetic enhancements for 2020 from two avenues. The first is American designer Sean Wotherspoon who adds his own touch to the Italian icon via the Vespa Primavera. Whether you like it or not, there is no doubt in the UK at least this version will undoubtedly soon acquire a Wetherspoons related nickname – probably as far away from the renowned designer of famous training shoes, the chances of getting a free pint with your Spoons Vespa are slim!

For the other makeover Piaggio have looked back to 1960s motor-racing to inspire their styling of the range of Vespa GTS (125 and 300cc) and Vespa Sprint (50, 125 and 150cc). Featuring retro style graphics, stylish black trim and detailing, with gold wheels. Two colour versions are available on the style that is more likely to appeal to classic Vespa riders looking for a commuter or long-haul ride.
