With the final round of the BSSO British scooter racing championship taking place this weekend at Cadwell Park, here’s a trio of vintage sporting images to capture the mood!
Back in the 1940s and 1950s, sporting success was seen as a good way of proving a scooter’s worth to the general public and press alike. Amongst the machines developed by Innocenti to compete against motorcycles on the track were their fabled Bitubo (twin tube) Racing Lambrettas, the complete story of which we’ll post at a future date.
Beginning life at the Lambretta factory in Milan, these scooters competed in Italy before being shipped to Germany to prove the worth of the NSU built Lambrettas there, ending their careers in Australia where again they were used to raise brand awareness.
Subsequently, a couple have resurfaced and are undergoing restoration.
As for their success, well we’re still talking about Lambrettas today aren’t we? Enjoy…
