A big thank you to Andy Francis and family for their hospitality last weekend up in Cumbria at his event. We were in town Friday, out with Dave and Claire from DDK Airbrushing who were doing a live painting display the following day. Good to catch up with a number of other scooterists out and about too.
Saturday the ScooterNova stall at Andy Francis’ Soul & Scooter Weekend was busy from the time we set up at 9am until we closed at the end of the day.
Unfortunately that meant I couldn’t take part in John Loving’s Gymkhana (next time Jiffy!), but we did get a chance to have a quick wander around to see what else was going on. Aside from fellow scooter parts and clothing traders, JG Scooters had their mobile dyno on site for anyone who wanted to test their steed, Team DSC were displaying their race scooters, and both Gran Turismo (Rich Taylor) and Scuderia Lambretta Veloce (Tim Boardman) were not only displaying their tuning goodies but were also on hand to chat about developments.
The custom show wasn’t the largest I’ve seen at an event, but the quality was pretty high and a tough task for scooter legends Norrie Kerr and Ron Moss to judge. As well as trading spare parts outside, Paul (aka Goofy) had brought along the ex-Mike Karslake Lambretta 3-wheeler Fire Engine (as seen in edition 19 of ScooterNova magazine), which is certainly not a vehicle you see every day. From the sporting end of the classic spectrum, replicas of both a Rallymaster and Six Day Racer were also displayed, while on the road-going side for me it was a toss up between a Vespa GS or an ochre GP200.
There was a lot of sparkling going on among the custom scooters on display, Rich at Riding Dirty Customs responsible for more than one including the stunning Florida Girl chopper featured in edition 17 of ScooterNova. Another scooter previously featured (edition 16) was Phantasmagoria, while the show also saw the debut of the stunning Lambretta custom St George that will feature in the next edition 28 of ScooterNova magazine. It was painted by Dave Dickinson at DDK who was busy all day painting a soul-themed artwork live in the hall next door, between talking with customers new and old.
The charity raffle had plenty of decent prizes on offer, including an Ex-Box exhaust donated by Ron Moss, items from VE UK by Norrie, and a Scuderia kit, all displayed temptingly close to the ScooterNova stall! And so after the raffle was drawn (no, sadly we didn’t win anything) we packed up the stall while other readied themselves for the evening of live entertainment, DJs, drinking and dancing.
