Something that’s been eagerly awaited by many is the arrival of the new CNC machined billet engines from BSG in Italy. Well, the good news is that first of these are now available and being built to order.

We first brought you news of this project here when the 305 was announced in 2014 and followed up shortly afterwards with more details here after Rimini Lambretta Centre brought a Vespa PX powered with a BSG 305 engine to the Bridlington Show in October 2014.

RLC then had a working Lambretta version of the 305cc engine at their open day in May 2015, which we reported on here. BSG were present too and had their Vespa smallframe 209cc ‘touring’ engine as well, which is probably not the same definition of touring we in the UK would attach to such a scooter!

So what’s available now then? The BSG engines are being sold in the UK exclusively though the Casa Lambretta Performance Centre here, which is JB Tuning. The first two engines to go into production are the Vespa large frame (as seen in the PX) 305cc and smallframe 209cc motors. These produce 51hp and 40+hp respectively, and the engines are supplied as a complete unit and so include top end, crank, clutch and carburettor, etc., but each one is built to order so there are a few options apparently such as 4 or 5-speed gearbox for the smallframe which will reflect on the final price.

Is it worth it? They’re not going to be cheap, but it would appear that for a similar cost you could buy a Targa Twin Lambretta engine (about 22hp) or a Lambretta RB250 type engine from reputable, established scooter-tuner (30hp), so it depends on what you want of course.

All we can say is that a few lucky people, including us, have been fortunate enough to ride a BSG 305 engin and it certainly left a smile on our faces!

You can watch a video of the Vespa PX BSG 305cc bucking on the dyno here.

For more details of the engines and to buy one visit the JB Tuning/ Casa Lambretta Performance Centre official website here, where you can also marvel at the dyno evidence of 51hp peak power @ 8841rpm, 30.59Ft/lb of torque at 8712rpm and top speed over 100mph for the PX 305cc version!

As for the Lambretta version? Sharing the same 305cc top end and crank as the Vespa PX engine, but with its own unique BSG casing; well, that will be next!  Watch this space…
